| We were lucky enough to have CNN and Brenau University speaker Slma Shelbayah come to North Cobb to speak to our students about her global awareness, media background, and her passion for preventing global conflict and cultural awareness. In the comments below, discuss what you found particularly interesting about the experience and ask any remaining questions to one another or to the whole group about what you heard. In addition, consider sending Ms. Shelbayah and email thanking her for your time and ask any questions you thought of after the fact or couldn't get one in because Dylan was hogging the spotlight (jk, Dylan--we love you). Slma Shelbyah was a very interesting speaker that definitely gave us a perspective on the media and the world we typically only get from the media itself. Her one on one Q&A was extremely beneficial to me personally to learn the inter workings of media and how they report to the wide public and deal with certain situations. Ms. Shelbayah was remarkably professional to all questions no matter how ludicrous or simple they were. The speech also gave me a new appreciation for the romanticism of Journalism itself. showing the world what the truth is, changing peoples views and how things work in the world with simply one story or another. Slma Shelbayah was an invaluable speaker to our generation who is losing touch with the world and the media, which in turn I'm very appreciative of her coming to North Cobb.

What made you ask so many questions? Are you interested in the similar things she is doing, or were you just curious? (They were fantastic questions by the way).

In what ways is our generation losing touch with the world and media? I think in some ways we are more connected. Sometimes, I feel we fail to empathize to a full extent, but perhaps as a protection mechanism. We have more access to the world around us.

I was very happy that Slma Shelbayah came to North Cobb to speak about her job and how she accomplished so many things in such few years of her life. It was inspiring how she never gave up on her dreams. she also finished college in 2 and years, even though it was hard and didn't get any sleep. But she said, "it takes hard work and dedication to accomplish your goals/dreams. That is what I enjoyed most out of her visit because sometimes people lack the passion and it was very easy to see that she was passionate about her job and coming to visit us, which is the most important part of doing anything.

Ms. Slma Shelbayah's presentation was awesome. I found the most interesting part to be the descriptions of different job titles at CNN. I had no idea so much work went into each individual story and how quickly they need to sort through all that information. I was very impressed when she spoke about her duties at the international desk, she was able to report on the Middle East and the Asian Subcontinent with such accuracy in such a short time frame - she clearly loves her job and an enthusiastic speaker makes everything more interesting.

Ms. Slma Shelbayah is truly a fascinating person. I enjoyed learning about her job and everything she gets to do and experience, because that is what i am interested in in the future. Ms. Shelbayah taught us all a multitude of lessons that we can use in our everyday life. For example when she talked about how she grew up in a place that did not have many resources, but because she worked hard she was able to get to where she is today. She also taught us that you cannot let boundaries stop you or you will never move forward. you must think outside of the box, keep pushing and keep moving. not to mention she included how in life you must own up to your mistakes or it will just get worse. I not only enjoyed the content of her presentation i also thoroughly enjoyed the way that she structured the talk. She opened by telling us about who she is, where she came from, and what she has done thereby establishing her ethos. Then throughout her question and answer session she was able to weave in a mix of pathos and logos to solidify her answers, and that just made them all the more interesting. Ms. Shelbayah held a personable but informative town throughout the talk and that really helped hold my attention (not that i wasn't interested any way). I also loved the fact that she would talk with her hands because it makes me as an audience member feel more included in the discussion. I found the whole presentation fascinating, but i found particularly interesting the part when we talked about how CNN chooses what stories to put up and how censored it should be. This is an amazing discussion because it sheds light onto the fact that the media cannot report absolutely everything and that they cannot report everything raw. they have to dig out the important pieces and find a healthy balance that cushions people, but still tells the truth. It was also incredibly interesting how fast paced the news world is. some questions I have left are: How did the President of Turner help guide you throughout this process and what is the most important piece of advice he ever gave you? Have you ever reported outside of the US and Egypt? Did the atmosphere of the community you grew up in help motivate you to become who you are today? There is an abundance of news out in the world, and even though you may not agree with it all, will CNN ever go to another news sight to see what or how they are reporting in order to provide a new angle or even fact check something? That is all ii have on this amazing presentation, Ms. Slma Shelbayah is an amazing person and she has inspired me to stay on the path that i am aiming for and to try and be as fantastic as she is.

Slma Shelbyah is truly an inspiration to me by being able to accomplish so much in a small amount of her life. Ms.Shelbyah is very passionate about her job, and her goals in life. I found it most interesting to hear about how much it takes to work at CNN. The workers have to find all the information from an entire area which can be a lot. I was also interested in how Slma Shelbya accomplished 2 and a half years in college. Questions I had left: Have you ever had a story you couldn't back up with enough evidence, if so what happened? Have you ever experienced or witnessed religious conflict while working with CNN? Have you ever witnessed something so gory that you broke down, or couldn't talk about the subject anymore?

I thought it was very nice and genuine for Slma Shelbyah to take time out of her job and come speak to our's and other's classes this week. I really liked her presentation and discussion about her job and her journey to become a reporter for CNN. It is truly inspiring to know that someone from not a typical childhood and growth can achieve something barely anyone can say they have achieved. I particularly liked how she had the courage and bravery to tell of her time in the Arab Spring and what she did to cover her story. Being someone that wants to pursue journalism, it really gives me hope that I can truly go anywhere with my goal. Seeing her journey, I will stop at nothing to get where I want to be

I enjoyed listening to Slma Shelbayah due to how genuine she seemed and also the overwhelming amount of passion she showed. She made it clear how much she loves her job and sharing her experiences. Something else that stood out to me was how inspiring she was. Slma is a high achiever and has ambition. She had a dream and worked hard to set her goals accomplish them. Slma was also very helpful in the sense that she was so willing to answer anyone and everyone's questions to the best of her ability. It was clear she was really excited to talk with us and I enjoyed hearing about her experiences while she was overseas.

Mrs. Slma Shelbayah was a phenomenal speaker. She was calm and collected, and very polite. It was so fascinating learning about the inter workings of the media. I have never thought about the complexities of how news is done... She had an interesting world view because of it and didn't hesitate to share it. I am curious, however, how she came to decide to become a journalist. Its an interesting career path I'd love to know more about.

Slma Shelbayah coming to speak with us was a phenomenal experience. I felt the most interesting and inspiring part of her presentation was actually when she answered our questions. It was amazing that working in television she was completely graceful in her responses to our tough questions on the fly. It really showcased her experience working on breaking news or in situations where one would have to remain calm in chaotic situations.

I enjoyed being able to listen to Slma Shelbayah. I liked how she discussed her her background and life to showcase how hard work and determination are necessary to achieve your own dreams. I also liked how she discussed a possible job opportunity, giving ideas to foster our potential adult lives. Her question and answer portion was very informative, and I liked how she tried to answer the questions to her best ability. I am thankful that Slma Shelbayah was able to take time out of her day to provide her life and wisdom to us.

Slma Shelbayah's presentation was an eye-opening experience into the steps that occur behind the scenes and that go into forming the most informative media segments for the nation. Shelbayah was an excellent speaker who disclosed her personal life story with our class in order for us to understand that we must always go after our dreams and strive for our goals, no matter how absurd they may seem. I appreciate how she replied to all questions in a poised and polite manner and answered all of them to the best of her ability. Her life experiences benefit not only her, but the people she speaks to by allowing them to see how hard work and dedication can lead to greatness. It was also interesting to hear the process of events becoming news stories because most people do not think about the "behind the scenes" of journalism. Slma Shelbayah's presentation was informative and intriguing and I am thankful that she came and shared her life and knowledge with us.

Slma Shelbayah's presentation was wonderful! Her background information was interesting and inspiring. It was amazing how she created a future for herself through hard work, perseverance, and values. It was really surprising to hear that she was able to complete college in 2 year and she still continued to do other things such as interact with youth and internships. Additionally, I her presentation gave me an eye opening view on the journalism and news world. I never realized that there was so much fact checking and steps before it is displayed to the public. Also, I learned many new things like how the news is almost displayed in a way that is digestible by the American public where there is factual evidence but, it is not raw so the people get the importance of what is occurring and are overwhelmed. One thing I did wonder was was are her future steps she plans on accomplishing since one of her main goals was to one day work at CNN. What does she want to accomplish next? How much of the current events is unseen or not announced to the public? And what has been the most important lesson she has learned from her time in high school to present day?

It was great that Slma Shelbayah came out to speak to us. I think it can be easy to forget that there is a strenuous amount of work behind an article (fact-checking, sourcing, editing). Slma gave me a new perspective on journalism because of the amount of energy and time that goes into it. She was very open about her life and how being muslim has affected her opinions or even her credibility at some points. She is very smart, driven and talented writer. She would not pout her self in an uncomfortable position for an article, which is respectable. My quesion is what was her favorite article to write and why? (I think someone asked but i dont remember)

Slma Shelbyah's presentation on international conflict was truly inspiring. Her background in multiple languages and cultures proved that the wider the worldview the better you can experience the world. Explaining how CNN censors and chooses media was something I never really thought about before. I was very inspired by all the things she has accomplished at a very young age such as graduating in 2 1/2 years and teaching at Breneau. My question for Ms. Shelbyah is how she became interested in journalism and how her background influences her work. Comments are closed.
